Maruta and colleagues have quantified visual tracking performance in mild TBI using a circular target trajectory,[58, 59] as studies have done in other patient populations.[91, 94] The authors quantified visual tracking gaze error variability by the standard deviation of the error distribution and compared this parameter to diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) fractional anisotropy (FA) values. Large gaze error variability was associated with low mean FA values in the right anterior corona radiata, the left superior cerebellar peduncle, and the genu of the corpus callosum.[ 58, 59] The anterior corona radiata and superior cerebellar peduncle are tracts known to support the sustaining of attention and spatial processing; and additionally, the anterior corona radiata and genu of the corpus callosum include fibers that connect to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. The prefrontal cortex is considered an important substrate for both attention and working memory, and these cognitive functions are often compromised in concussion patients.[58, 59] Thus the authors conclude that predictive visual tracking may be an important metric of assessment for concussion patients. Further work is needed to examine the diagnostic potential of this method and whether it may be used as a means of monitoring recovery and aiding in return-to-play decisions following concussion.
